Research Project Ideas

In this project, each student is tasked to do extensive reading about certain topic that he/she will be  assigned to. Particularly, each student will pick his project to be about the technologies produced by one of the following start-up companies related to wireless communication and computation systems.

Category # 1: Cellular and Enterprise Systems Innovations

Category # 2: Wireless Network Innovations

Category # 3: mmWave and Wireless Hardware Innovations

The student needs to do the following in his/her project:
  • 1- Check the company website and read all the details about it.
  • 2- Prepare a presentation summarizing what the company is all about. Basically, you must understand the technology that the company is using in its products.
  • 3- Read the white and technical papers/ patents published by the company.
  • 4- Find out one drawback or problem that the technology developed by the company suffers from.
  • 5- Come up with a solution or idea to solve the problem you found.
  • 6- Demonstrate your solution by using mathematical analysis or computer simulation in MATLAB or any other software program.
  • 7- Write a detailed technical report showing and presenting your solution and the results you obtained.

That is it. You must try to finish your work on the project before the allotted deadline.

Patent application form

Field of technology and background of the invention Describe the technology and the areas of use the invention relates to. Provide general background knowledge that is required to understand the framework of the invention. Leave a description of a problem to be solved and the invention in the subsequent paragraphs. In order to safeguard the security of confidential and potentially patentable information, we cannot accept information supplied in the form of weblinks. If these are provided, they will not be visited. Please state 'not applicable' if you don't have any content to put in this field. Problem Describe the problem that the invention solves or the situation that the invention improves. Mainly concentrate on the technical aspects of the problem or the situation. Please state 'not applicable' if you don't have any content to put in this field. Prior Art Describe how the problem was solved earlier or the current state of technology that is causing the pro

The relation between modulation and waveform in communication systems

In recent research efforts related to 5G and beyond radio access technologies, there has been  many contributions in the development of new innovative methods and schemes related to the following two research directions at the physical layer level. 1) Advanced waveform designs: The purpose here is to create new improved waveforms (other than the conventional OFDM waveform) to enhance the system performance metrics in terms of PAPR, OOBE, ACI, INI, synchronicity, complexity,  spectral efficiency, reliability, and robusetness to ICI, Doppler, and phase noise, etc. Examples of waveforms in this domain include GFDM, FBMC, DFT-s-OFDM, ZT-DFT-s-OFDM, W-OFDM, F-OFDM, edge filtered OFDM, OTFS, OCDM, etc.  2) New modulation techniques: The goal here is to come up with novel modulation schemes (other than the conventional M-ary QAM/PSK modulation schemes) to improve the system performance metrics in terms of spectral efficiency, energy efficiency and reliability.  Examples of t
